How to Do Things You Hate: 5 Mindset Shifts to Get It Done Anyway
We all hate doing things that we don’t like to do but have to do. Shocker.
There are myriad reasons why we don’t want to do something. Maybe we suck at it. Maybe we don’t want to socialize with people during the task. Or maybe the task just simply sucks.
Whatever the reason—be it for work, our social life, or the overall betterment of ourselves—pushing past our resistance could reap amazing results. If only we could figure out a way to love doing the things we hated.
In this article, I’ll be sharing five ways we all can change our mindset on getting things done that we hate to do.
Stoicism
Stoicism is defined as enduring pain or hardship without showing feelings or complaining. Now, I know we’re here for leisure and good vibes, but sometimes we have to just take a deep inhale, exhale, put our heads down, and do the things that need to be done. Especially if it’s an everyday work task, and if that means getting a paycheck or not, I hate to say it, but we gotta dig deep, girlies! But don’t fret; the fruits of your labor will be sweet, always remember that.
Create a New Ambiance
Maybe you need to change the vibe of where you are doing this task you hate. If it’s your personal office, change things up! Perhaps buying a new piece of furniture will cheer you up or you can shift around the pieces you already have. Perhaps an actual change of scenery is needed to bring new life into doing a dreaded task—sometimes I like to go into a co-working space, a café, or outside on the patio to get my work done.
Add Something You Enjoy to It
Whenever I need to do something I hate, I like to listen to a “feel good” playlist to lift my spirits. Maybe you can add something like this to lessen the disdain you have for a task. Center the activity you enjoy around the one you hate. For instance, if you love to crochet and you don’t need your hands for your task, try that.
Learn to Like It
Think about the goal you set out in doing this task that you hate. Was it to grow your business? To make more money? Help out a family member? Or something that would afford you more time in the future? Don’t think about the task as something you hate; try your best to think of it as a means to your freedom and visualize the bigger picture of doing the task.
Ask for Help
Money is one of the best resources we are afforded in this life. So, if you can pay someone to do the task that you hate for you, then by all means, go for it! Always make sure you properly vet the people you are going to hire for your task. There’s nothing worse than hiring someone to do a task that you hate and they can’t even do it.
We definitely got this, girlies. The delights of sipping champagne in Saint-Tropez will be the fruits of our labor—just hold on. What are some tips you’ll be using to better deal with fulfilling a task that you dislike? Comment below!
